Laser Depigmentation at Advanced Torrance Dental

What is Laser Depigmentation?

Laser Depigmentation, also called Laser Gum Bleaching or Laser Gum Lightening, is the process of removing pigment from gums to make them appear lighter or “pinker”. The goal of this treatment is to give the gums a more uniform appearance and improve the overall aesthetics of the smile.

Typically gum tissue (gingiva) is pink, excess deposits of melanin can create the appearance of brown or black spots or patches on the gums. These spots are called hyper-pigmentation and can range in size from smaller areas to larger areas that cover most of the gum surface.

Your lips and gums frame your smile and can have a major impact on your appearance.  Our office uses specific settings of the PerioLase MVP-7 to easily address this cosmetic need with a safe, fast and comfortable procedure.

What makes the gums dark?

Melanin is the natural pigment responsible for skin color and tone. Higher amounts of melanin in your gums can create brown or black patches on the gums or lips (gingiva).  When this happens, it is called melanin hyperpigmentation or gingival hyper-pigmentation.  Dark gums can affect individuals of certain cultures or with pigmentation imbalances. The denser melanin is harmless and removal is an elective cosmetic procedure.

Why we use the PerioLase MVP-7 for Laser Depigmentation:

Compared to traditional surgery using scalpels and burrs, dental lasers are faster options for gum depigmentation. But, not all dental lasers work in the same way!  The PerioLase MVP-7 wavelength targets and destroys melanocytes in the gums. Only melanocytes are affected, keeping your gums healthy and intact.  Other lasers work differently, and perform an action similar to a “laser peel”.  They vaporize the surface layer by layer until the melanocytes are reached.  This method means healthy tissue is destroyed as well.  Lasers that use the ‘peel’ method can also result in more bleeding during the procedure.

An additional benefit of using the PerioLase MVP-7 is this laser selectively destroys the bacteria that triggers gum disease. Using this technology, we can decontaminate your gums

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Gum Depigmentation:

  • Does Laser Gum Depigmentation hurt?

Local anesthesia is used, so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. Post operatively, the treated area may feel slightly tender, similar to the feeling after biting into a hot food. You can eat and drink normally after the procedure but avoid spicy foods for a few days. If needed, over the counter NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin or ibuprofen can be taken.

  • How long does laser depigmentation last?

The results of laser depigmentation can be long lasting if your gums are taken care of. Smoking does negatively affect the longevity of laser depigmentation.

  • What is Gingival Hyper-Pigmentation?

The tissue that surrounds the base of your teeth to your lips is called gingiva, or your gums.  Melanin is the natural pigment that dictates the tone and color of your skin.  Unusually high concentrations of melanin can cause dark spots or inconsistencies in the color tone of your gums and lips. This is called Gingival Hyper-pigmentation.

  • How long does laser depigmentation take?

Laser treatment is an accurate, quick way to eliminate dark gums in as little as one visit and with a very short healing time.  Very dark areas may require more than one treatment. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure.
